Product 1: CAPE BARREN 2017 FLYING GEESE SHIRAZ CABERNET
Unique Selling Proposition
The Cape Barren range is unique in many ways. Rob Dundon has involved himself intensely in all aspects of wine production in McLaren Vale for more than 45 years. This experience provides a deep insight into the soils, vineyard sites and the contribution of geographical aspects to the varietal flavours. Our vines are very old with some over 100 years old. Only in South Australia can a winemaker boast of such a special asset. These superb ancient vines have their roots deep into the earth where they can extract the very essence of nature. Vines of such age naturally possess mature flavours with very juicy palate texture, and soft balanced tannins. You can truly taste and enjoy the history and the generations of passionate investment.
This uniquely Australian blend provides the perfect segue to the rest of the Cape Barren portfolio, where the concentration is on noble varieties or long established and respected Rhone or Bordeaux blends. This wine reflects sunny Australia with ripe and velvety richness and is fantastic value. Flying Geese Shiraz Cabernet is greater than the sum of its parts, and is respected for its balance and harmony. It is delicious for immediate drinking but is also ideal for the cellar and will age gracefully over many years. Despite the long history of this iconic blend, it is a modern-day success, as new generations discover its magic, and this wine reflects the excellent Mediterranean-like conditions of McLaren Vale. Enjoy the absolute Australian uniqueness of this classic.

Winemakers have been blending varieties together as long as they’ve been making wine. French winemakers in the 1800s discovered that Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon made a great match, but when the appellation system was introduced, the blend was forbidden. In Australia, pioneering winemakers unconstrained by regulations were discovering the brilliance of this blend.

Product 2: CAPE BARREN 2019 ADELAIDE HILLS SINGLE VINEYARD GRUNER VELTLINER
Unique Selling Proposition
The grape-growing history of the Adelaide Hills dates back to the 1870s. The geography and climate have created a wildly diverse range of soils. But mostly they are shallow sandy-loam over clay, and often with limestone – the winemaker’s friend. The cooler climate and higher altitude of the Adelaide Hills, provides excellent conditions for the production of very elegant white wines of supreme quality and natural acidity.
A truly exciting and elegant wine from a single vineyard in the very cool Adelaide Hills. It has distinctive spicy and white pepper characters balanced by Nashi pear flavours. A delicious dry white wine with structure and lingering mouthfeel. The exceptionally cool nights in the Adelaide Hills ensures natural acidity and more lifted and intense fruit aromatics. Here not only is the average of day and night temperatures similar to those in Austria, but both have similar soils overlaying metamorphic rock with intrusions of quartz and ironstone. So, the Adelaide Hills has become the Australian ‘home’ for Grüner Veltliner.

Grüner Veltliner is the most widely planted grape variety in its native homeland of Austria. The name literally means ‘green grape’. Classic Grüner has a distinctive spicy, peppery taste on the tongue, and a rich pear-like flavour that deepens with age, developing a savoury edge and creamy texture that many wine lovers find similar to old white Burgundy. Its natural acidity and rich fruit content means it strikes a delicious balance between aromatic and refreshing. Not too sweet, yet not too dry, it makes an elegant and exciting white wine.
Kind of grapes | GRUNER VELTLINER
Tasting note | Pale, yet attractive bright green appearance. The aromas are enticing - floral intensity of Nashi pear and white pepper spice, with the added complexity of pink apples and citrus freshness. An appealing and refreshing palate, with hints of grapefruit complexed with pear and stone fruits characters. The wine focusses on structure and mouthfeel as much as these flavours and finishes with a wonderful spicy aftertaste so typical of this variety.

Product 3: CAPE BARREN 2017 McLAREN VALE OLD VINE RESERVE RELEASE SHIRAZ
Unique Selling Proposition
Old vines are the survivalists of the Wine Industry. Winemakers agree there is an extra degree of character and depth of flavour in Old Vines. Like the Old Vines themselves, the Cape Barren Old Vine Shiraz is a tribute to the endurance and longevity of these ancient vineyards and the loving care shown to them over the decades. Mature grapevines are better established in their framework; they have deeper roots which can be a buffer against drought, and their root systems are extensive, exploring more of the ground and making extra nutrients available to the vine. Old vines have thicker trunks which contain more carbohydrate reserves, and it is these stored reserves that provide the fuel to start the growth cycle in spring.
This uniqueness of Old Vines is very evident in the Cape Barren Old Vine Shiraz. The fruit for this wine comes from 3 vineyards all growing on soils with a high content of sand. Together, they produce intensely flavoured wine showing power, but with a deceiving elegance and grace. Rich in plum character, and with traces of Middle Eastern dry spice and black pepper nuances, the wine is enticing and shows a multilayered depth and complexity not found in wines from younger vines. Fermentation was carried out in upright 10 tonne static fermenters at around 24-26°C, and remained on skins for about 10 days. The wine was pumped over skins twice per day, and pressed at around 2 degrees Baume. One-third was added to new French oak hogsheads to complete fermentation, and the balance was added to older oak when dry.

58-75yo vines, one third completed fermentation in new French oak hogsheads, the remainder in used oak. This approach has worked wonders, adding texture and spicy/savoury nuances to the black fruits. Blewitt Springs and the 2017 vintage have done the rest.
Kind of grapes | SHIRAZ | |
Tasting note | Deep and dark black/purple intensity. Wonderfully integrated aromas of spicy dark fruits, chocolate and cocoa overlaid with hints of licorice and black olives. Intertwined in all this are hints of Indian spices and peppery notes, balanced by the wafts of high quality French oak. The sheer essence of what McLaren Vale Shiraz is renowned for; power, yet displaying a deceiving elegance. A full-bodied wine where intense black and blue fruits dominate, enhanced by swirls of mocha, vanilla and spice seamlessly melding into a sophisticated and velvety texture. The French oak and fine-grained tannins enhance a persistent finish.
